Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Religious events hold a central place in many societies, serving as platforms for spiritual renewal, social interaction, and cultural reinforcement. Audience participation is a critical factor in the success of these events, influencing their overall impact and sustainability. In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, religious events such as Eid celebrations, Ramadan lectures, and interfaith dialogues are not just religious observances but also avenues for community bonding and conflict resolution.

Audience participation encompasses various forms, including active engagement in rituals, financial contributions, and collaborative decision-making. Studies have highlighted that participatory approaches in event planning and execution foster a sense of ownership among attendees, enhancing their commitment and the event’s effectiveness (Ahmed & Musa, 2024). Moreover, religious events often serve as a medium for disseminating messages of peace, tolerance, and unity, particularly in regions like Maiduguri, where religious tensions have historically impacted societal harmony.

Mass communication plays a pivotal role in mobilizing audiences for religious events, with radio, television, and social media platforms being instrumental in spreading awareness and encouraging participation. This study examines the role of audience participation in enhancing the success of religious events, emphasizing the interplay between community involvement and the use of communication strategies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the significance of religious events in fostering community cohesion, their success in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council is often hindered by limited audience engagement. Factors such as inadequate publicity, poor infrastructural support, and security concerns have reduced attendance and active involvement in recent years. Additionally, the lack of inclusive planning processes has alienated certain segments of the community, limiting the reach and impact of these events.

While religious events hold the potential to promote unity and spiritual growth, the absence of effective strategies to enhance audience participation undermines their overall success. There is a need to explore how participatory approaches can be leveraged to address these challenges, ensuring that religious events remain impactful and relevant in fostering community development.
